R.I.P Roc Raida

Posted in Music | September 19th, 2009

Roc Raida began his DJ career in the early eighties at the age of ten. Surrounded by such inspirations as his father, a member of the Sugar Hill Records act Mean Machine and hip hop impresario Grandmaster Flash, Raida cultivated his interest into an absolute passion. Now, Roc Raida is considered among the best of the contemporary DJ’s and has brought the underground art of Turntablism to a fresh new level.

In the late eighties Raida gained prominence as a member of the New York-based crew the X-Men who, for obvious of copyright reasons, later became known as the X-ecutioners. Champions of furthering the turntablist movement, the X-ecutioners made their reputation by utilizing the techniques of beat-juggling; the manual alteration between individual kick and snare sounds to create original drum patterns in real time. This practice has been an inspiration and a force in Roc Raida’s style.

In the beginning defeat was commonplace, as battles were mainly popularity contests. The more contests he entered the more the competition began to appreciate his style and determination. Pushing his limits and raising the standard with which DMC’s are judged, Raida began to get noticed. His impressive finishes in some of the premier DJ battles; first place in the 1991 “As One”; second place in the “Superman Battle”; and second place in the 1992 DMC US Finals were just the beginning. In 1995 Raida, was crowned the DMC World Champion in front of a massive London audience.

The past several years have seen Raida traveling around the globe promoting the art of Turntablism in such exotic locations as Singapore, Turkey, Japan and Australia. Last year on a panel at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Raida was appointed “Grandmaster”, by some of Hip-Hop’s founding fathers. Rules for this dubious honor state that one may only be bestowed with the approval of another Grandmaster, Raida was not only approved, but welcomed by Kool Herc, Grand Wizard Theodore and scratch evolutionist DST. To round out a phenomenal decade, Raida was inducted into the DMC Hall of Fame at the 1999 DMC World Finals in New York City.

Turntablism has come up through the rave culture and is now showcased at every Electronic Music happening with crews such as The X-Ecutioners, Invisbl Skratch Piklz, Allies and Beat Junkies headlining events nationwide. In the new Moonshine Mix Series Crossfaderz, Raida solidifies his “Grandmaster” status by creating a vibrant mix of underground hip-hop skillfully creating a fantasy mix-show with a tongue-in-cheek look into the hip hop world.

Roc Raida was recently featured on an episode of “Saturday Night Live”; the first DJ to ever share the stage with the fabled SNL band. Proving, once again, that Raida is the perfect example of a master perfecting his art.

Jay-Z vS T-PAIN

T-Pain has clarified the reasons behind his unexpected Jay-Z diss over the weekend and said he was only trying to get the rap mogul’s attention.

Pain said his “F*ck Jay-Z” rant came from feeling disrespected by Jay-Z at New York radio station Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert last June.
“I will say, the interview he did yesterday morning, it made me feel so much better,” Pain said in an interview. “Because these are high times, I really look up to dude — I could have been one of these stupid artists and go at him lyrically — my dad always told me, the best way to have somebody get at you is to go talk about them with somebody else. It was really just me trying to get his attention like ‘Yo, please call me because I’ve been trying to call you for two months now.’ I just wanna know, if you doing it for publicity, fantastic, and I’ll do it with you — just like 50 and Kanye, them dudes are fans. When they wanted to put it out as beef, to make it interesting, they acted like they hated each other — I’m definitely cool with Jay. I bugged out that day. It was people in the crowd saying ‘Jay-Z destroyed you.’ — He did clear up yesterday and I feel a lot better. Neither him or I have the time to be going through this beef crap man. I’m a fan of Jay-Z and Ima always be a fan of Jay-Z, me and Fab talked today, he apologized, he said it was stupid on his part — somebody made a fake T-Pain page today saying nothing but ‘F Jay-Z’ and ‘F Fab’ and then Fab went in on me.” (Power 105.1)
Jay-Z offered his response to the derogatory remarks Pain made about him in an interview yesterday (September 8)
“I made it very clear I wasn’t talking about him [on 'Death of Autotune'],” Jay explained. “I think he’s talented, I don’t thik he needs auto-tune to sell records but if that’s his prerogative — Everybody has a birthday. They don’t have much else to say, they can’t attack my credentials as an artist or my lyrics as an emcee.” (“The Ed Lover Show”)
Footage of Pain dissing Jay over the weekend landed online earlier this week.
“But Jay-Z is 59 years old, I don’t think he has the right to say if it’s dead,” Pain said to a crowd. “That’s just me, that’s just me. Because I didn’t come here to preach, I didn’t come here to have a sermon. I came here to have fun, now ladies and gentlemen, I will give you the full right and the ability to kick my a** if you see Jay-Z do this — Now I just want to clarify, are there any Jay-Z fans in the crowd — but you don’t see me saying rap is dead. Even though it is because all the rappers are trying to do T-Pain.” (YouTube)
Fab taunted Pain via his Twitter page Tuesday afternoon.

Jay-z Concert!

It appears as if fans of Jay-Z aren’t having such a good time at his most recent venues.

During his stop at Chicago’s House of Blues, a man was stabbed in the back following an altercation with a couple.

The stabbing stemmed from an argument between the victim and another man as they were leaving the concert area shortly before 11:30 p.m., said Police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak.

The victim’s sister and the other man’s girlfriend got into an argument. Things escalated into a shoving match after the men intervened. The unidentified 32-year-old then stabbed the 20-year-old victim in the back.

House of Blues security staff intervened and seized the attacker. Police arrested him on the scene.

The 20-year-old victim was taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Most recently, last night at New York’s Blender Theater, his 75 minute set came to a halt after some sneaky fans’ marijuana smoke set off the fire alarms.

Jay was reportedly 3/4 of the way through his set when the sirens went off and the music cut out.

The crowd booed as Jay-Z walked offstage to investigate the disturbance and security guards were sent into the audience to search for the pot culprits, although they emerged empty-handed.

Jay returned a few minutes later and finished off his performance.
